Educommunication, ICTs and prison. Testimonies of persons deprived of freedom regarding digital exclusion

Abstract

This article presents the results of a qualitative investigation on the perception of the internal people of the Topas prison, Salamanca (Spain) about the educational opportunities and the use of ICTs they carry out in prison. They value the technological gap and the lack of opportunities to compensate it as a handicap, since, in their opinion, it will stop their integration opportunities. The right to access to new information and communication technologies is included in the framework of the Right to Education. This is a Fundamental Right contemplated in national and international legal systems. This finds one of its failures in a prison model in which the sentences of deprivation of liberty add another factor of restriction to these new technologies, despite the fact that the prison is defined by its re-educational and resocializing purpose.
