Abstract
Because of real difficulties in developing peripheral regions with public grants, the strategy of endogenous development arose. Its objective is to activate intraregional potentials with the aim of initiating additional development impulses. This approach is of particular interest for the „young” East German regions, which — in spite of substantial public subsidies — are still lagging behind from a development point of view. This article investigates the prerequisites for and opportunities of activating endogenous potentials by using the region of West Pomerania as an example. The resultant recommendations for action show that the strategy of endogenous development is a major contribution to regional development.
