Analysis of production, demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of producers and farmers in the rural area of Medellín

Abstract

The study analyzes agricultural production and the socioeconomic conditions of small farmers in the rural area of Medellín, Colombia. It identifies issues such as the lack of soil conservation practices, limited access to external financing, and uncertainty about the continuity of traditional crops due to globalization and climate change. The study is relevant as it highlights the need to promote agricultural sustainability and enhance farmers’ resilience through climate-smart practices. A mixed methodology was used, combining surveys with open and closed-ended questions applied to 1,480 farmers across five townships. The results show that most farmers rely on their own capital and lack access to sustainable technologies. Strategies such as agroforestry, direct seeding, and rainwater harvesting are proposed to improve production and food security.
