Abstract

The stereospecificity and regiospecificity of biotechnological synthesis compares favourably with classical organic synthesis and is carried out by a biocatalyst. However, there are limitations in many cases because of the sensitivity of biocatalysts to reaction conditions. The high cost of biocatalysts and problems associated with their regeneration as well as their use in non-aqueous solutions are aspects where research is needed. The successes and failures of several biotechnological conversions are outlined with examples. Printed in Great Britain. © 1988 IUPAC.
