Abstract

Reviews the physical, psychological, and social aspects of quality of life (QOL) among refugees and the prominent role of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in studies on refugees. Aspects of QOL for refugees including food and water, crowding, grief, loss of dignity, guilt, hopelessness, lack of trust, and shame are summarized. Prevention and intervention activities for trauma and the available assessment instruments for measuring QOL in this population are reviewed. The development of the World Health Organization QOL instrument (WHOQOL) and the module (WHOQOL-R) to be developed for refugees are outlined.
