Abstract

This article highlighted the first synthesis of HydroxyUrethane modified alkyd resins by polycondensation reaction. Two new hydroxyurethane modifiers (HUM), with two hydroxyl functions, have been synthetized from renewable resources and have been copolymerized with alcohols and acid derivatives to yield HydroxyUrethane modified alkyd resins. Chemical resistance analysis has shown that HUM increased the alkali resistance of alkyd resins up to 44 %. Film properties such as gloss or drying time remained equivalent with the exception of color. Moreover, the increased flexibility of the films could be interestingly modified according to the structure of the HUM (aromatic or aliphatic). This result highlights a simple, greener and less toxic solution to improve the chemical resistance of alkyd resins.
