Abstract

This paper deals with the way the right graphic boundary of sentences influences its syntactic structure. In utterances such as Paul est entre. Par la sortie, the chunk Par la sortie might be considered a kind of graphical adjunct of the preceding sentence. First, the author proposes an account for the general syntactic properties of these adjuncts. He then sketches a typology based on the kind of relation that binds them to the left sentence, creating the 'adjunct effect'. It is shown that some verbs do not accept to be separated from their complements by a period. Consequently, this sentence boundary is a limit of verbal complementation.
