Abstract

Conventionally, Cast iron discs are used for brake discs. In the recent past, lightweight materials replace conventional materials in many vehicles to make them more fuel efficient. This work reports the results of the modelling and simulation of brake discs using five different materials. AISI6150, Cast Iron, Ti–6Al–4V, LM13 and Al SiC MMC were considered as brake disc materials. The temperature distribution, heat flux and thermal gradient of these materials were analysed and the results are reported. Al SiC MMC is found to have the lowest weight, distributes heat to a larger area for enhancing the heat dissipation, has a higher heat flux and a low thermal gradient.
