Abstract

This chapter examines the critical imperative of sustainable airport capacity expansion and management in an era of unprecedented air traffic growth and heightened uncertainty. Despite a robust post-pandemic recovery that has pushed global passenger traffic beyond 2019 levels, the industry faces significant challenges from geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, and capacity shortages. The traditional model of reactive, physical expansion is no longer sufficient. Instead, a shift toward a flexible, data-driven approach is necessary to reconcile growth with environmental stewardship and operational resilience. We discuss five core themes shaping the future of airports: demand uncertainty, sustainability, smart technologies , flexibility, and their evolution into integrated urban platforms. The chapter presents case studies, including Western Sydney Airport, to illustrate how airports are leveraging sustainable building practices and advanced planning models to safeguard future expansion and innovation needs, mitigate environmental impacts, and enhance resilience. Additionally, we explore the role of digital transformation, driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics, in optimizing operations, improving passenger experience, and enabling energy efficiency. The chapter concludes by outlining a strategic framework for future-proof airport development, emphasizing the importance of collaborative data platforms, modular infrastructure, and stakeholder engagement to navigate a volatile and rapidly evolving landscape.
