Abstract

The utility of phrases as search terms in information retrieval (IR) was investigated. Linguistically motivated phrases extracted from query texts were discussed in relation to natural language processing. Shallow syntactic processing was employed for the identification of candidate phrasal terms from query texts. A scheme for the maximization of retrieval performance in the IR system was developed by the utilization of weighting variations.
