Abstract

Chargemosaic(CM)membraneswithsemi-interpenetratingnetworkstructureswerepreparedby blendingpoly(vinylalcohol)asamembranematrix,poly(allylamine)asapolycationandpoly(vinyl alcohol-co-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonicacid)asapolyanionwithvaryingpolyelectrolyte contentsunderdifferentcross-linkingconditions.OurmethodcanprepareCMmembranesofalarge area easilyatlowmanufacturecost.Althoughthefluxofelectrolytesthroughthemembraneisless than thatthroughatypicalchargemosaicmembranesuchasDesaltons (Tosoh Co.,Ltd.),whichwas preparedusingmicro-phaseseparation,thepermselectivityforelectrolytesthroughtheCMmembrane was morethan4timeshigherthanDesaltons. TheseCMmembraneshaveenoughmechanicalstrength to formthinlayeronaporoussupportmembrane,therebyincreasingthefluxofelectrolytes.
