Abstract
This article redefines poverty and demonstrates the way in which adventure programmes can be used to empower the poor so that they can become well-adjusted and well-motivated citizens. The techniques that are discussed focus on the development of emotional intelligence (EQ) and employ the experiential learning theory in the form of cooperative games, problem solving, communication and trust activities. The literature study shows that adventure-based work can be helpful in the fight against poverty as it provides a method for training, empowering and motivating people. These techniques may be used in order to develop EQ, which could lead to the overall empowerment of individuals, groups and communities.
