SP516STANDARD OF CARE IN PD UNITS IN SERBIA: QUESTIONNAIRE DATA

Abstract

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an important form of treatment for patients with late stage chronic kidney failure requiring renal replacement therapy; however, the percentage of patients treated with PD is still low in Europe and the rest of the world. According to the latest registry data, 8.1%prevalent and 10.7% incidental ESRD patients in Serbia are treated with PD. Since 2010, we did a lot of effort for PD penetration and the percentage of incident PD patients increased from 7.1 to 10.7% thanks to continuous education. Still, drop-outs remain high due to cardiovascular diseases and modality-related complications. METHODS: We aimed to analyze standard of care of our PD centers by using PD Centre Self-assessment Tool as a part of Baxter Renal Quality Program. Study included 15 PD centers (75% of all PD centers in Serbia) and questionnaire was grouped in four categories: logistic and staff, quality of work, education program and CQI presence/ support. All answers were evaluated from one to five, five being the best. Data are presented as a mean of all responses. RESULTS: Logistic and staff (five questions) were graded from 2.8 to 3.9 where training area had the worst grade. Among the question about the quality of work (11 questions), the worst-case assessment was related to the issue of patient care outside of working hours (2.4) and the best was related to incidence of culture negative peritonitis below 20% (4.7). Education program was assessed with six questions and the worst assessment was related to answer about involvement of PD nurse in patients' selection for PD program (2.7) and the best was related to regular education of PD nurse (4). Finally, CQI presence and support was evaluated with five question and 'the importance PD is recognized in the centre' was marked by the highest score (3.9) and 'PD program is the part of CQI' is marked with the lowest score (1.2). CONCLUSIONS: According to Self Assessment Tools we recognized the obstacles for successful PD program. Apart from PD penetration, a lot of efforts have to be made in the field of logistic, patients' care out of working hours, better selection of PD patients and implementation of CQI program which is our next goal (Table presented).
