Abstract
The urban heat islands phenomenon occurs when the center of cities is warmer compared to the temperature of its surroundings. There are a number of factors that affect the formation of this typical phenomenon in cities, including the reduction of green areas, concentration of buildings and impermeable roads, as well as regions with high population densities. Therefore. the research's aim focuses on analyzing the factors that affect the formation of urban heat islands that have been generated in the Metropolitan Area of Querétaro during the last 10 years through the economic, social and socio-environmental characterization of the Metropolitan Zone of Querétaro through Vector Geographic Information Systems, which allow remote analysis of the conditions of the study area, in addition to the consultation of documentary sources for the research's support. The economic elements addressed describe the economic activities carried out in the study area, and also the relationship it has with higher education and the development of research that provides solution strategies for the adverse effects of this phenomenon. Once the characteristics of the regions have been described, places that are likely to suffer the impact of heat islands can be detected, since they are formed in the regions with a higher degree of paving, insufficient green areas and a lack of water bodies.
