Abstract

This chapter focuses on registration of specialist translators in western Germany. The chapter reviews the work undertaken in the Federal Republic of Germany for setting up an index listing translators and other individuals specializing in various fields of knowledge. This index has now been published as a book entitled Fachübersetzer der Deutschen Wirtschaft. A start was made by collating the addresses from previous references; wide publicity was given to the work undertaken to enable translators who were not listed in previous sources to apply for admission to the new register. The procedure of review as adopted by the board followed closely the criteria proposed by International Federation of Translators and the suggestions contained in the UNESCO report. The process of elimination revealed a broad variety of views held by applicants on competence in specialized translating.
