Abstract

The present study describes the process of construction and psychometric study of a scale that measures elementary and high school student perceptions about their level of school identification. The questionnaire was administered to 1089 students attending the 6th, 7th, 9th and 10th grades in continental Portugal (median age=13 years). One random subsample was submitted to exploratory factor analysis (n1=354); a second was submitted to a confirmatory factor analysis (n1=388). Analyses yielded three dimensions: (a) Intrinsic Valuing, α=.74; (b) Practical Valuing, α=.74; and (c) Belonging and wellbeing, α=.78. The scales are useful and appropriate for evaluating students’ perceptions about their school identification.
