Abstract
The term performance causes fascination and also confusion in many young students, a problem that is probably due to the lack of educational resources in Spanish. In this article I propose an overview of the different meanings assumed by the term performance in some humanities disciplines (linguistics, anthropology, gender studies, performance art and performance studies) and in music, identifying some of the main lines of research in this area. I also intend to introduce two issues that arise in the study of performance: the difference between performatic and performative, and the dichotomy live performance/recorded performance, the latter especially relevant in addressing mediatized musical performance.
