Abstract

During the military dictatorship in Brazil, as well as in several other political regimes, disputes fought on the symbolic plane had crucial importance. Among the social control actions taken after 1964, the dissemination of certain ideas by formation of intellectuals was decisive. Courses were given by the Escola Superior de Guerra (ESG), with centrality and constancy, to agents of higher education field, among other strategic sectors. We seek to think about the foundations of some initiatives taken by the school in order to influence intellectually that field, considering its importance in the "combat against subversion". The method adopted followed the considerations of Rüsen proposed in his classic trilogy. Among the main results, it was identified that the school occupied a central place as a channel of intellectual formation in the period. The school influenced hundreds of professors and thus contributed decisively to the control of higher education and to the attempts of militarization aimed by the regime.
