Abstract

Versa Power Systems is a leading developer of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) for clean electric power generation. The commercialization of SOFC technology requires the development of enabling cell and stack technologies, combined with an engineering focus on system efficiency and cost reduction. This paper highlights the current status of SOFC technology at Versa Power Systems. It includes a review of: The integrated single step co-firing cell manufacturing process, which has demonstrated capability of fabricating anode-supported cells up to 28 × 28 cm2 The endurance validation of production cells in single stack repeat units at both steady-state (25,000 h) and transient (50 deep thermal cycles) operating conditions Stack developments that have enabled a significant improvement in endurance, efficiency and cost reduction The emergence of direct internal reforming (DIR) as a leading active thermal management strategy for higher power density stacks The development of a state-of-the-art 2 kWnet AC natural gas SOFC prototype system (Aurora system) with 34% net electrical efficiency (LHV).
