‘Cada puta hile’: un inesperado tropiezo de Ortiz Gallardo y Gabriel de Sancha con la censura con motivo del Almanak y Kalendario para 1792

Abstract

Commissioned by the Council of Castile, the Sancha publishing house located at Madrid’s Aduana Vieja printed a yearly series of calendar-almanacs for 1780–1796, both in sewn octavo and two-sheet, wall-calendar folio versions. The censorship file initiated after a denunciation for obscenity and subsequent partial destruction of the original 1792 calendar, due to the inclusion of ‘obscene’ content, allows us to reconstruct the production and commercialization processes of these hitherto unknown calendars, and visualize their extensive print runs which facilitated wide consumption in all classes of society. The original 1792 Calendar was most probably substituted due to the unfortunate proximity of significant religious and ‘obscene’ expressions in the text's layout.
