Abstract

Over the last six millennia, many different materials have been used for writing: stone, wood, metal, animal skins, leaves, bones, shells, clay, wax, pottery, silk, cotton, papyrus, ivory, bamboo, bark, palm leaves, linen, and paper. Many of them often decisively influenced not only the way a particular script developed, but also the shape of the manuscript (book).
