Consultant diabetologist expansion is best served through strengthened links with general medicine

Abstract

Diabetologists need to be the local leaders of diabetes service developments and need to be resourced to develop and provide modernised diabetes services rather than throw away a valuable resource, which is limited, in contributing to acute and general medicine. Therefore, I suggest that 'strong links with general medicine' are unlikely to service the needs of patients with diabetes, and unlikely to attract trainees into the specialty which will help consultant recruitment.
