Abstract

This is a review article summarizing current knowledge on how the genetic makeup of the host red blood cell can affect invasion by malaria parasites, their intracellular development and their ultimate fate. Evidence from clinical studies of the effect of various blood groups, hemoglobinopathies, thalassemia and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase upon malaria are reviewed. Available knowledge regarding the mechanism by which these genetically acquired factors affect the clinical course of malaria are described. The author postulates that a more basic understanding of these interactions will provide basic knowledge of the biology of plasmodia and perhaps better methods of treatment and control of this group of parasitic diseases.
