Abstract

The question is posed, 'Is electrocoagulation comparable to a burn?'. If so, one must bear in mind the possible onset of tumoral growth in burned tissues, as has been observed after the age of 30 to 40 yr. It is demonstrated that after electrocauterization of the ectocervix the epithelium regenerates from the columnar epithelium in the majority of cases, but that sometimes regeneration is from the squamous epithelium. After electrocauterization the regenerative epithelium sometimes shows atypia, but in all cases its differentiation and maturation is normal. One cannot confirm or negate that electrocauterization is a cancerogenic risk factor.
