Abstract
Sarcopenia is a disease characterized by loss of skeletal muscle, muscle strength and physical performance, being the major cause of frailty in the elderly. The sarcopenia is highly prevalent in indi- viduals with Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) leading to a poor prognosis and higher mortality in this population. The presence of sarcopenia in COPD is likely the result by the interaction between external and internal factors as systemic inflammation, oxidative stress and genetic polymor- phisms, frequently observed in individuals with this respiratory disease. This review summarizes the current knowledge about the pathogenic mechanisms linking COPD with sarcopenia. Key
