Violences that Trans women experience in the city of Bogotá

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the violence experienced by transsexual women in the city of Bogotá. To this end, a qualitative phenomenological investigation was carried out using the semi-structured interview technique. The participants in the research were 37 transsexual women between the ages of 18 and 49 who were residents of the city of Bogotá. The results show that all of the women interviewed had experienced different types of violence, and that this violence was perpetrated by family members, fellow students, co-workers, the public forces and the general population. 33 transsexual women experienced psychological violence and 19 physical violence. The actors who have most frequently exercised violence against them are civilians or the general population and the public forces, particularly the police. The places where they have been most violated are public establishment or spaces and work.
