Abstract

Purpose: We clarified a dual-income couple awareness of husband's support of wife satisfaction during a pregnancy. We discuss nursing activities enhancing such support. Methods: Semi structured interviews with three couples during a pregnancy were transcribed and qualitatively and inductively analyzed using Berelson's method. Results: We identified five categories of support showing (1) pleasure in the pregnancy; (2) understanding and discussing continuation of wife's work; (3) empathizing with wife's feelings and health in work, pregnancy, and birth; (4) sharing housework; and (5) preparing for parenthood. Similarities and differences in awareness were clarified. Conclusions: Five categories were identified based on similarities and differences in awareness. A discussion of these similarities and differences indicated that nursing activities should focus on communication between spouses, cooperating in housework, and having couples share their thoughts.
