Legitimating pacification: An analysis of journalistic coverage on the UPPs

Abstract

Analyzes the coverage of O Globo about the Pacifying Police Units (UPPs), published between 2008 and 2016. For this, the methodology of the interpretative packages (GAMSON and MODIGLIANI, 1989) was used, based on Goffman's (2012) concept of frame analysis and applied by Beckett (1997) to analyze articles on crime and violence, adapting it to the contemporary and local context. It was sought to investigate how certain themes gain visibility, instead of others and how such themes are framed through privileged points of view in place of many possible others.
