Abstract
Objectives: To examine the relationship between rural connectivity and reduced out-of-pocket (OOP) healthcare expenditures in India, focusing on the role of physical connectivity, digital services, and financial accessibility in alleviating healthcare costs for rural populations. Study design: This study presents a conceptual framework that explores the interconnectedness of rural connectivity dimensions—physical, digital, and financial—and their collective impact on healthcare outcomes and OOP costs. Methods: The framework is developed through a review of existing literature on rural infrastructure, healthcare access, and financial inclusion. It identifies key drivers of rural connectivity, such as road infrastructure, telemedicine, and financial services, and their influence on healthcare affordability. Results: The conceptual framework highlights that enhanced rural connectivity significantly reduces both direct and indirect healthcare costs. Improved roads ensure better access to healthcare facilities, telemedicine mitigates travel and opportunity costs, and financial services empower rural households to manage healthcare expenses effectively. Conclusions: Strengthening rural connectivity in India can bridge the healthcare access gap, alleviate financial stress for rural populations, and promote equitable healthcare access. The framework provides a strategic roadmap for reducing the healthcare infrastructure divide between rural and urban areas, fostering sustainable development and social health equity.
