This review paper first gives definitions of the solubility parameter ( delta ) and of the cohesive energy density (CED) and then discusses the subject under headings - thermodynamics of polymer solutions (energetic of mixing, calculation of the heat of mixing from delta values, allowable difference in delta values for infinite miscibility between polymer and solvent, errors in the theoretical model, deviation from the Geometric Mean Rule); correction of the solubility parameter concept for polarity and hydrogen bonding; application of solubility parameters in coatings (solvent system for resins, compatibility of polymers with each other and with plasticizers, surface tension of liquids, pigment dispersion; wettability of polymers, ultimate strength and adhesion, interactions with cured coatings). Extensive solubility parameter data are tabulated for many polymers and solvents.
