Staphylococcus spp. multidrug resistant in goat's milk: a serious One Health problem

Abstract

Dairy goat farming is one of the most consolidated agricultural activities in the Brazilian semiarid region. Despite its importance, there are several limitations to its development. Among the obstacles, goat mastitis stands out, a disease recognized worldwide as the main cause of economic losses in dairy goats. In addition, the most serious issue is the possible transmission of multidrug-resistant infectious pathogens by contaminated dairy products. Antimicrobial resistance is treated worldwide as one of the main threats to One Health. In this context, Staphylococcus spp. is considered one of the main pathogens, as it is capable of carrying several mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobials. For these reasons, this review addresses the impacts caused by goat mastitis in Brazil and the mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus spp., as well as the dangers to human and animal health.
