Abstract

The purpose of this study is to see how poverty is exploited through TikTok's live streaming Sadbor dance. The main focus of this study is to determine whether this exploitation only worsens their socio-economic conditions or creates a more positive social awareness and encourages actions that are more in favor of social change. The research method used in this study is a qualitative research method by using semiotics analysis from Roland Barthes. In addition, qualitative research methods emphasize the in-depth understanding of the problem rather than generalization. Based on the research conducted on the live streaming phenomenon on TikTok, especially related to the exploitation of poverty and the culture of online begging. Exploitation of poverty in live streaming, a phenomenon that occurs on the TikTok Sadbor account involving the exploitation of poverty, clearly shows how content creators use tragic situations to attract viewers and get virtual gifts. To get viewers and gifts, creators often show children and adults dancing or rolling through the live streaming.
