Abstract
The major taxa of Cetacea, Pinnipedia, Sirenia, and Desmostylia that are presently known to have ranged across the Oligo-Miocene boundary are briefly discussed in regard to their biostratigraphic utility. In general, though marine mammals have potential in this regard, their fossil record is not known in sufficient detail at present for this potential to be realized in other than crude correlations.
