Abstract
The article discusses the challenges faced by an anthropology of law that focuses on western modern societies and on the analysis of the justice system in its relation to issues such as violence against women and violence against the elderly. Building on the debates within the legal-feminist theories, the following subjects are explored: (1) the relationship between universalism and different forms of particularism, (2) the opposition between judicialization of social relations and the politicization of justice, (3) new forms of control that characterize contemporary societies. The author points out the limitations and fallacies of the concept of culture in the understanding of contemporary legal and political dilemmas.
