Abstract

A first government-sponsored programme in 1996-2000 for smallholding development in the Republic of Benin has been based on the production and distribution of selected oil palm seedings. The organisation experienced with farmers at village level is described in relation to seed production, training, nurseries and seedlings production, quality control and distribution. The results obtained and their impact at village level are indicative of the success of this first programme. They are due to sustained smallholding development.
