The objective of this work was to accomplish a data research about the suppliers of raw material of one of the medium sized phytotherapy industry, and classifying them according to their geographic region and trade representativeness. Data, thus obtained, were compared with the related literature to measure the position of Brazil as a producer related to the international competition. The assessed industry obtains 25 active ingredients of 12 different suppliers to produce its medicine. Brazil and Germany represent, each one, 34% of the suppliers with only 4 qualified companies. However, whereas German companies provide the industry with 14 raw material (56%), Brazilian producers supply only 5 kinds of active pharmaceutical ingredients (20%). It was noticed that Brazil has a reduced business participation in the herbal drug market in the world. Investment in training, technology and infrastructure of small producers can be alternatives to improve quality and competitiveness of Brazilian product. The furtherance to the research and development of new products, associated to the strengthening of the national market economy, and structured public policies that enable the appreciation of Brazilian product against to the imported ones are also points to be worked out to boost the commercial representativeness of our country.
