Criterion of normal tension crack formation in rocks under compression

Abstract

The problem on origination of normal tension cracks around defects in material subjected to uniaxial compression is considered. The gradient approach taking into account the material structure in the stress concentration zone is proposed to use for the problem solution. The values of critical pressure are determined for different rock samples.
