Adrenergic beta-blockade with ici 50,172 (practolol, "eraldin") during bronchoscopy

Abstract

Summary: The effect of a new beta-adrenergic blocking agent, ICI 50,172 was assessed on thirty-three patients during bronchoscopy. The indications for giving the drug were the development of undesirable tachycardia and the onset of dysrhythmia. An intravenous injection of 10-20 mg produced satisfactory reduction in heart rate in every patient, usually within 1 minute of injection. Further doses produced little further fall in rate. Dysrhythmia was usually abolished by ICI 50,172, but in three patients it recurred. There were no undesirable side effects and there was no clinically detectable increase in airways resistance. © 1970 John Sherratt and Son Ltd.
