Abstract
A genetic system producing postmating reproductive isolation between two populations of Mimulus guttatus is described. In one population, Copperopolis, there is a single gene tightly linked to, or pleiotropic to, the gene for copper tolerance. In the other, Cerig-y-drudion, a limited number of genes are involved. The genes interact in a complementary manner to produce FI inviability. These results suggest that reproductive isolation could evolve as a direct result of adaptive differentiation in sympatry. © 1983, The Genetical Society of Great Britain.
