Abstract
Since the beginning, there have been records of the relationship between work processes and their influence on the health and illness of populations. The work carried out by professional drivers is done in irregular shifts, long daily shifts with repercussions on health. The workday entails psychophysiological and mental overload, evidencing the appearance of symptoms and signs of chronic and acute diseases. The general objective of the research was to outline the sociodemographic profile of the drivers of transport and to know the quality of life of these professionals. It was a crosssectional descriptive and exploratory study with a qualitative approach, with semi-structured interviews with 34 members of a Cooperative of the category in the city of Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte / Brazil. The results showed that their living conditions are characterized by excessive hours worked, cardiovascular and psycho-social diseases, in addition to other health problems and lack of preventive care. The cognitive and affective costs imposed on workers reflect on the organization of work. There must be greater investment in improving the health and quality of life of these professionals.
