Abstract

A survey is given in this paper of the damaging effect that can arise in materials in a fusion reactor because of their exposure to a flux of energetic neutrons. Neutron flux and spectra are discussed in the text in relation to fast fission systems. Comparisons of various important reaction rates are also made. The main discussion then centers on the effects which can occur in structural material found in the blanket and magnet shield regions. The effects of damage on conductors in the magnet region is also considered, and finally a brief survey is made of the graphite, liquids and insulators also found in the nuclear boiler.
