Abstract

Iron (Fe) is one of the many heavy metals contained in open water, such as rivers. If accumulated in the body, the metal can cause some medical conditions, such as irritation to skin and eyes, breathing problems, and in the long term, cancer. This research aims to find out among the variables pH, size of activated carbon, and contact time, which one is most influential on the reduction of Fe content in Jetis river, Salatiga. Research method used is experimental design with a factor of 2 3 to determine the optimum conditions of the process, the decrease level of metal content (Fe), and the quality of processing results that can be achieved. The results showed that the most influential variable was pH, so that optimization is carried out under conditions of pH 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and carbon size> 140mesh, and 60 minutes of contact time. After optimization, the highest reduction point of Fe metal content was 97.57% at pH 8, activated carbon size> 140mesh, and 60 minutes of contact time. The level of heavy metal Fe produced from this study was 0.150 mg / L from 6.184 mg / L existing value can be said it meet the class 1 river water quality standards according to PP no.82 of 2001 with a threshold value of Fe 0.3 mg / L.
