Abstract

Although Western sexuality has its origins in Jewish and Greek tradition, Christianity is its closest forerunner and the most influential. Not much interested in sexuality, Christ was an innovator in this area. The apostle Paul, in tune with the ideals of Greek Stoics, looked at sexuality with a certain contempt. In the first patristic, opposing opinions on the role of sex in human life can be seen. The following essay shows three instants:Christ, Paul and the early Christian exegetes. No serious consideration of Western sexuality can dispense with these precedents.
