Abstract
The inadecuate use of antimicrobial drugs has hought about an increase of microorganisms resistance, a rise of hospital costs, and a poor quality service. A rational policy was applied at the medical service of the «Joaquín Albarrán» Clinical and Surgical Teaching Hospital in Havana City, Cuba, in order to reduce the use ir not to use the little effective or ineffective antimicrobial drugs. Procedures and methods created by a multidisciplinary team were put into practice. The restriction established by a Control Group shows encouraging results. The functions of this group are also explained in this paper. Concrete effects were observed in the microbial resistance against the most used antimicrobial drugs. Significant data have been obtained in relation to the reduction of costs and of volumes of antibiotics used compared with the reference year when the present policy was not implemented. Research revealed that his policy may be applied to any hospital at a low cost and with short-term results.
