Abstract

A new method of subjecting herbaceous plants to drought involving daily transfers of root systems between nutrient solutions and air is proposed. It appears to have the following advantages over previous approaches: (1) standardization of the intensity and timing of drought; (2) avoidance of the confounding influence of mineral nutrient stress; (3) allowance for a diurnal droughting cycle; (4) provision for progressive cycles of drought; (5) complete retrieval of roots and shed plant parts. © 1985 Annals of Botany Company.
