Abstract

Urbanization is one of the main conversion factors for natural vegetation and a strong filter for species composition in cities. In a qualitative and quantitative study of the grassland vegetation in an urban square of 2.64 hectares, inserted in the Pampa biome (municipality of Canoas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil), we found 216 plant species. Compared with works carried out in conserved environments and in larger areas, the site presents important biodiversity, and their characteristics indicate the potential use of native flora in the urban environment. The data show that many native plants can substitute for the exotic species used in landscaping today, as well as that there is practically untapped potential for using native species as ornamentals. In this case study, the use of native grassland vegetation in the urban context and the potential of using small spaces for biodiversity conservation are discussed.
