Abstract
The present paper discusses the main types of mass spectrometers available in 2002 (TIMS, ICP-MS, SIMS and electron impact-MS) with application to isotope geology and especially to geochronology. Brief comments on the principles of operation of the main components, ionization sources, mass analyzers and ion detectors are made. Finally, the performance of the different types of spectrometers is compared. Palavras-chave:
