Abstract
This article, which examines the problem of endemic violence that Africa has been experiencing for several decades, reflects upon identity conflict and African ethno-politics in the 20th century. After describing the main characteristics, the article then analyses examples of such conflicts in contemporary sub-Saharan Africa and ends with some modest proposals to prevent such conflicts, proposals designed to preclude an implosion of the African continent.
