Abstract

Almost all manufacturing processes lead to the formation of residual stresses due to inhomogeneous plastic deformations or locally different thermal expansion coefficients. If residual stresses have negative impact on the component behavior, they need to be removed afterwards. By adjusting appropriate processing strategies positive effects on the component properties can be achieved. This allows for optimization of the component states, the so called "Surface Engineering". The correlations between process parameters and surface layer state, particularly the residual stress state, will be the main focus of this work. All main groups of manufacturing will be addressed.
