Effect of service screening mammography on population mortality from breast carcinoma

Abstract

Breast cancer deaths have been reduced as much as 44% in Swedish counties that offer service screening mammography. In the United States, death rates from breast cancer are now approximately 39 percent lower than expected given the increased incidence of invasive carcinoma. This estimated reduction may be attributed to heightened awareness of breast cancer, increased utilization of screening mammography, and improved treatment.
